Sonic Citizenship
FRIDAY 11.09.2026 – 12:45
Join us Friday when Marie Højlund, Ania Mauruschat and Morten Breinbjerg talks about Sonic Citizenship. Sonic Citizenship begins from a simple but often overlooked premise: sound does not merely surround us; it structures how we are together. Presented in collaboration with Seismograf
Marie Højlund is a composer, sound artist and associate professor in Sound Studies at Aarhus University. She researches sonic citizenship in a variety of contexts with a practice-based approach. Her core interest is sheltered environments, such as the hospital, where the boundaries between the private and the public, the individual and the community, are blurred, and where questions of privilege are unraveled
Ania Mauruschat is a German journalist and researcher. She holds a university degree in Journalism (Diplom) and was trained as an editor at the Deutsche Journalistenschule in Munich. After around ten years working as a journalist, she moved into academic research, where she has, among other things, led the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie project Sounding Crisis (www.soundingcrisis.eu). She was a participant in the PhD Lab Epistemologies of Aesthetic Practices at Zurich University of the Arts and is currently completing her PhD on radiophonic noise aesthetics.
Morten Breinbjerg is an associate professor of digital aesthetics at Aarhus University and researches how sound can open up new ways of understanding, experiencing and participating in the world around us. His work includes sonic citizenship, sonification of climate data and interaction design. Through interactive sound installations, he has also helped to develop new approaches to cultural heritage communication.
