Folk Och Rackare

The legendary group Folk & Rackare holds a central place in the history of Scandinavian folk music. Formed in the mid-1970s by Swedish musicians Carin Kjellman and Ulf Gruvberg, later joined by Norwegian members Jørn Jensen and Trond Villa (of cult band Folque), the quartet became known for their innovative interpretations of medieval ballads—blending intricate vocal harmonies with both acoustic and electric instrumentation.

Their music was a bold departure from traditional approaches, embracing the narrative power of old songs while infusing them with a novel, contemporary sensibility. With a sound rooted in historical tradition yet unmistakably modern, they paved the way for a new generation of folk and ballad singers across the Nordic countries.

Folk & Rackare’s influence is profound. Their groundbreaking album Rackarspel was named one of the five most important records in shaping Swedish folk music by music magazine Lira, and their impact continues to resonate in today’s folk revival. As producers and performers, Kjellman and Gruvberg have helped define what folk music can be—both reverent and rebellious, ancient and ever-evolving.

Following a reformation in 2017, the group has returned to stages across Scandinavia, reminding audiences of the enduring magic in their harmonies and the timeless stories they bring to life. With every performance, Folk & Rackare reaffirm their place not just as folk musicians, but as keepers and reshapers of cultural memory.
